A Piece of Wagga's History Saved For Posterity
Henley Apartments in Tarcutta Street has long been a Wagga landmark. Built in the 1930-s it has lost some of its former glory, and recently another small but significant part of its history was threatened when the 22 mail boxes in the reception area, where
the concierge would have sat in its heyday, were replaced being insecure and somewhat on the small side.
Residents would have looked many thousands of times through the little glass windows with expectation trepidation etc and opened the little doors with trembling hands to retrieve cheques, bills, love letters, death and birth notices. The doors would have faced an inglorious end at the Wagga tip had it not been for artist i.k.bonset, a resident of the building. Noticing the spiffy new plywood mailboxes being installed he asked if he could have the old ones. Over subsequent weeks 21 artists in various parts of the world received one of the doors in the mail with an invitation to use the door as the basis for a small art work.
The results will be on show for a very short time only
from 15-19 July 1996 with a low-key opening at 4.00 pm on Saturday July 13 at the HR Gallop gallery located in the foyer of the School of Visual and Performing Arts building at Charles Sturt University.
