COMMUNICATIONS

well... when i was constructing my research proposal this seemed like a good idea

to have an appendix with all electronically written and transmitted communications with a cast of thousands somehow, no matter how tenuously, connected with my work and research starting with the most recent on top - if a message is in progress (as yet unsent) it is in grey - this allows people who are really keen to hear from me to check if i am in the process of writing to them - it is also a kind of graveyard for those messages which one begins to write but never sends (i guess they will remain grey forever :)

now... i am not so sure - i just don't seem to have the time to keep updating it - maybe one day i will or i might delete it - we'll see how it goes...

major major modernist poets dude frost = usa wh auden = uk but went to america to live both dead now (i think)

Three Short Poems by wh auden (1948?)

"The underground roads

Are, as the dead prefer them,
Always tortuous." "When he looked the cave in the eye, Hercules Had a moment of doubt." "Leaning out over The dreadful precipice, One contemptuous tree."

reply (i)

hmm interesting question and i shall add it to the thousand things briefly i don't think truth and beauty are necessarily mutually exclusive or maybe it is just that i hope they are not i have known just a few moments where beauty and truth are so so so close together.... but i think sometimes truth and beauty can move closer and closer together (over time) and reach a certain point and then move apart again this is very painful i think one of the problems we have as human beings is that we are unable to hold or contain both truth and beauty in our minds at the same time perhaps this is where the sublime is located - or it is one of its locations it is a very human thing tho and perhaps it is only in death that this is finally clear to us

reply (ii)

you have asked such a huge question - i wonder sometimes whether you are aware of the magnitude of the questions you ask - the meaning of meaning the relationship between truth and beauty - what was the one about death or why does epitaph keep changing - which is a big question for me - you know i had a major sort of realization the other day as a result of jonbennet ramsay’s nine year old brother now being accused of her murder and for one ridiculous moment i wondered whether this meant that i should take her image out and then i think : of course it is about all violence - it is not even just about violence against children although in epitaph i propose to work with just the images of children for aesthetic reasons ! because i need it to be beautiful as well because it is so ugly violence against innocent defenceless vunerable little people is the saddest kind of violence that it is possible to imagine
that is why i made and am making epitaph and that is why epitaph keeps changing and actually i think it teaches us something
and i thank you and the one or two other people who have asked me these questions which cause such trains of thought and such a flow from my keybaord

anyway sorry yes of course you are aware of it and this is what the thousand things is about - the ancient chinese in the tao te ching talk about the ten thousand things a lot and really that is a much more accurate number indicating things that are really really important or really really really important but i am not even sure i can cover the thousand things
there is some doubt for you

you have to give me many more questions maybe we can take this into a more formal collaboration in this way :
i have set up an account on our experimental multimedia server called onethousandthings which you can access - i don’t know if you have got access to a web edior but the design for the page and the site is deliberately simple so you can easily add things through a text editor and raw html in fact i want to make the thousand hings lynx savy - you know lynx the text based web browser?

some of the questions you have asked me i don’t understand but we will give them a number and see how we go

i wonder i can only assume that you are famliar with the front end of one of my web sites a few years ago which opened with choose and two buttons one truth and the other beauty

and so what is so delicately held is exactly art and/or poetry and/or music and i include in “art” and “poetry” the best of film and the best in design the best of all creative product which is made with truth and beauty in mind and this is the secret of the thing and this is what you have picked up on : one of the largest “issues” in the whole debate : art and poetry is everything that is made with truth and beauty in mind - and if it is made with a sort of special insight into what truth and beauty are and what their relationship is
and from the point of view of doubt this is an interesting thing because truth is actually seen only momentarily and whilst the buddhists and the zen dudes might claim that there is such a thing as satori or sammadhi - enlightenment where the truth is seen so clearly and so deeply that one is fundamentally changed forever in fact free from the cycle of life and death - i don’t believe it - notice i didn’t say i doubted it - i looked for it everywhere for many many years and i kind of found it and lost it and found it again i have written about all this and some of it is on the web but and in the end note that i became an artist and i would say forget it - just aim to see the truth and beauty at one and the same time for one moment in your entire life and i think you are doing very very well :)

mark

there is a chapter in visionary film called recovered innocence and what we spoke about on saturday has set me thinking that the sublime as a concept is perhaps a symptom of romanticism - if this is a kind of refusal of the ugliness and violence of the contemporary world such as what we are living in today and perhaps my grasping for the sublime is like the romantics grasping for it in their own turbulent time

hortense

actually i am not as keen on winona's lower half but she does have a stunning clavicle and you don't need java to browse it - i would recommend reality bites and/or boys (not the recent australian film but the 1996 film directed by stacy cochran) Ê
:)

but if you had html mail (ie you are using outlook or navigator/communicator mail) you would see this page in phd pink and the following in big letters and in the colour red :

sally
tnx for your letter

i know you love snail mail but to encourage you to enter the digital communication era i am going to send you a postcard with the url of this my communications page and then you will read this when eventually you log on :)

i guess i am happiest if i can write electronically and make connections and change colours and it seems strange to me that everyone is not really excited about html mail

as you can see the text is in white and so i am still in the process of editing it and you know how i told you that never is anything really finished - you just come to a point where you say enough! and leave it at least for a while (or you don't)

do you like this shade of pink? don't worry no one does... problem is #e47871 looks different in dreamweaver to the way it does in netscape and the way it looks in explorer is different again - btw you will be amazed but i have grown to prefer explorer over navigator since using it to test my phd site - it is faster smoother and more stable

so... you been eating da yellow candy bananas i have been eating a lot of fruit - real fruit - i had a big fruit thing ten years ago but this declined over time until i can honestly say i had about one piece of fruit a year but now i live in town again and it is summer i am into fruit in a big way i have been enjoying plums, bananas, grapes, passion fruit, melons and kiwi fruit - i have just bought my first mango of the season which is a huge red and yellow orb i am just waiting for the right moment to ravish it :)

soon the term will start again and you will find me a tardy unreliable correspondent when the shop opens for busines and so too will your adventure begin - remember there is always a spot for you in the honours programme here in happy happy wagga wagga and you can enter halfway through the year - i am only saying this in case you find the television industry a dreadful bore and you want to bail

did i say i am still really enjoying living in town (scan...) no well i am :)

i have made a responses link on the epitaph index page and here it has some comments by a writer/artist friend of mine (historical car crash) and your shockwave piece and some of the comments from your previous letter (tnx - i will remove these at any time when you no longer want them to be on the net - i have included your initials only so as not to embarrass you ! but i am happy to change or remove or link the credit) so next you are going to ask me why i have used that picture with the texts and um i think the reason is well it is (was) a ceo and i was going to give him a meat hat but then i thought he looks too sad to give him a meat hat and then oh god... i don't know... whatever...

i think i have this communications page as part of my phd - that was your next question? - because i need a place in or a part of my phd where i can say oh god i don't know whatever :)

a phd is equal parts
knowledge and doubt
history and present
theory and practice
received and original ideas

i have been working flat out the whole break on it - i am not complaining since i am happiest when i am working (and it is going well) and i have been very happy (with my work) ! have a look through the rest of my phd site (there is even a hidden section!)

with reference to your comments in your letter about the many different sallys it is a credit to your intelligence and your sanity that you are able to voice this and to feel comfortable with it because of course every individual person is actually a collection of personality fragments and the idea of a single consistent unified individual is an illusion and it is something people think they “ought to be” and they struggle desperately with the disparate nature of their many selves

professor!

welcome back to the evil planet of students be they post grad or undergrad they are a total scurge and should be banned from the university

it is not as if anyone cares ( but i do!) and i have made great strides with the phd i feel i am going to be well and truly ready to sock it to anyone who cares to listen at the presentations whenever they are and by the time the deadline is approaching (whenever that is!) for the presentation of my research proposal i shall have fleshed out (i won't say "fatten up :) the basic structure of my phd site which is now up and which is easy to download and requires no special plugins as long as you stay within the phd site itself - oh it is nice if you have SKIA in your fonts folder but it matters not one tiff to the legibility or otherwise of my beautiful phd site - it is really designed to be as easy on the eyes and bandwidth and memory and hardware as possible and is being tested with all kinds of browsers and configurations

of course if you are mad or bad or sad enough to venture into the works in progress part of the site you will need the appropriate plugins installed etc etc

wot dya reckon : arty.edu
as in what the aggies call us :)
it might have to be arty.edu.au i don't know what is involved in having an edu domain name but if you reckon its a goer i am going to try and do it - arty.net is taken much to my chagrin but perhaps it is useful to identiy ourselves as an educational type situation

you know today professor ray king actually said that something was a something type situation and i just cracked up i didn't know anyone ever actually said that for real

so there you go art imitates life artimitateslife.net or should that be lifeimitatesart ??????

by the way davidgreen.com is for sale i notice :

good morning to you sir

i know i said i'd write to you about cornell and i will but in the meantime i was wondering whether you had any thoughts on paglia

"...Art no matter how minimalist is never simply design. The enterprise of art, in a stable collective era or an unsettled individualistic one, is inspired by anxiety... Art is a shutting in in order to shut out. Art is a ritualistic binding of the perpetual motion machine that is nature... The first artist was a tribal priest casting a spell fixing natures daemonic energy in a moment of perceptual stillness. Fixation is at the heart of art, fixation as stasis and fixation as obsession. The modern artist who merely draws a line across a page is still trying to tame some uncontrollable aspect of reality..."
(sex and violence or nature and art p42)

isn't this the human condition per se ? the fixing and transformation of nature...
i wonder what cornell would have thought about this...

have a nice day

hey damo

hmm seemed to have missed replying to this one i am usually pretty quick with emails so my apologies - yeah i know about ipix and i like their set up with the custom made tripod and everything makes it very precise and actually i had in mind to ask for some money from somewhere to buy one it is a little extravagant tho - i'd like to go to the louvre paris france and use it there to make the pictures for a virtual object of amor and psyche by canova the old 18th century french sculptor dude

it is good that you re having a good time with your work wish i could say the same for me :(

i want to put out a cd soon with some of my sound stuff (also i am playing live! at the band comp thingy since i am now a student...) so i might take you up on it - so i could just send you a cd and you could fix up all the pops and everything? have you heard of scanner i just recently picked up a cd by him called delivery have a listen if you get a chance because i think it is exactly like on the ball hits you between the eyes kinda :)

see you when you're in town take it easy

what do you think of this:

in order for you to like something
it is necessary for you to have seen

"...What fascinates (Gerald van der Kaap) is an erotic relation with technique, whereby he formulates sexuality in art and technique in some other than the commonplace manner. He challenges and humiliates, flatters and thrashes, seduces but is also sometimes defeated and defiled - apparently without minding very much by that very same challenging and fascinating technique. Then we also recognise in him the artist in the classical sense who sacrifices himself in our place..."

i have to start somewhere - perhaps with this and in this way is easiest?

a phd progress report

confirmed and enrolled and present on the premises mostly 7 days a week :)

i want to make a work that is here and now but also connects with the "there" and the "then"

moved a whole bunch of stuff into the phd office that is to do with my art making but there is a lot of sorting out to do

so much stuff i have collected over a lot of time with the view of dumping it all to digital and throwing different things together and seeing what happens - one of the fine things about my new computer will be hopefully that it is fast and stable having sufficient memory and will save me time by not freezing hanging and falling over so you have to wait for it to restart and lose what you didn't save

thus there is a lot to be said for a rigorous working methodology when you work with digital because it is so easy to lose what you think you have "got" where as in analogue mediums once it is there it is just there until you destroy it even in photography all you have to remember is about the light - keep it out of the light until it is fixed

perhaps performance and some installation art even some video art have a lot in common with screen based digital art (whether interactive or not ) but they differ also so much in the permanence of their media

oh... i have been invited to show work at two festivals the impakt festival for audio visual arts in utrecht and the love bytes festival in sheffield uk

um yeah why do a phd someone inevitably asked and i said because i can (refer blade runner etc)

as this exchange could well form part of the presentation of the written work for the phd i'd better choose my words carefully but i applied for the phd because it became possible and so on one level i am doing the phd because i can and because the faculty and the university somehow managed the generosity of having enough confidence in me to offer me the possibility

(also i have to admit it tickled me to one day be able to sign as dr. dan zero phd (wagga wagga) it is not quite the university of woolloomoolloo -gday bruce- but it is the best i could do...)

and the process is interesting to me - i have got a completely free hand and i have been given exactly what i wanted to do my work or half of it - there was no point in asking for all the other stuff i want and i can work with what i have got and what there is and i have always had to do that

at the moment i am:

- gathering the more significant digital art projects i completed in 1995-1997 and

(i) putting the interactive CDROM pieces together on a single CDROM so i can submit them to people that have expressed an interested in looking at what i have done eg Brian Langer is putting together a national media art collection for the Queensland Art Gallery, and Debbie Abraham (Regional Art Galleries Coordinator) who is inviting me to speak at the Regional Art Galleries Conference on New Media in the regions (Broken Hill, August)

(ii) sorting out the three major versions of my internet sites which i did during the years 1996-7 and putting links to them on my new low-key internet site http://www.well.com/~danzero

- testing some systems and getting lots of advice from the Direct-L Australia list and other people and places - one of the possibilities with the latest version of Director 6 which i have been investigating is the ability of a CDROM based work to log on to the net and to retrieve a text (it can also work at least in theory with images and sounds) so that the text whenever the cd was in use would be the latest version of that text - that could create a very dynamic work that was in principle always different and infinitely variable - and connected to here now

- i have been trying to find a way of getting the mac voice synthesis software to speak texts from within director and i have been testing a director xtra to do this

how many words is that then?

when is the earliest i could present?

:)

johannes

ps i am setting up a basic site for the written part of my phd as a test at http://golum.riv.csu.edu.au/~jklabber/phd
