the willing suspension of disbelief

in his (in) famous essay .... coleridge (research)

in order to be able to enjoy the product of the contemporary cultural industry it seems that the demands on the audience in terms of the willing suspension of disbelief (read : doubt) are infinitely greater than they were in the day of coleridge let alone shakespeare where boys played women and the stage was minimal

all narratives on screen even a documentary requires or demand this suspension of disbelief - even the simple single perspective convention demands it but the more "sophisticated" the special effect, the more dazzlingly rendered the 3d animination the heavier are these demands - the more virtual the more you need to "want to believe" to quote the x-files slogan

__________

there are pacticular examples of artists working in a material art medium (a late mondriaan or a pollock or a rauschenburg) who may have grounds to claim that no suspension of disbelief is required imperfection seems to be an essential element of the sublime and it is one that interferes with the suspension of disbelief
