it is a popular misconception that the contemporary
writer's role is to produce texts. i propose that the primary role of the writer
today, like that of the artist, is to think. if that process results in text
then so be it, but it could equally be an act of erasure, an utterance heard
by no one, a white cross on a white background, or nothing at all.
at a time when production and the product is valued above all things the only act of resistance left to those of us who wish to resist, is refusal : refusal to produce.
Johannes Klabbers was born in The Netherlands in the same year as Sid Vicious and Michael Jackson. His short story the american dream was selected by Frank Moorhouse for Best Australian Stories 2004. He has maintained online presence since the mid-nineties and is currently exploring the potential of the wiki as an online writing tool with Anna Poletti. He makes a zine, HalfArse, and likes to tell people he is writing a novella called inbetween days.
